CONCEPTION

The idea behind AgroFreshPark is to create a coordinated, large-scale greenhouse park powered by its own geothermal energy. AgorFreshPark will be an international centre of agricultural production using modern technologies. We want it to become an agro-logistics centre in Poland and Europe. The project is based on the Polish-Dutch cooperation and support of experienced specialists from many sectors. The location was selected on the basis of a feasibility study. In addition, AFP will be distinguished by its own service and support.

GOALS

The main objective of AgroFreshParku is to provide customers with the highest quality food with minimal carbon emissions. Reducing the carbon footprint will reduce the negative impact of production on the environment. AgroFreshPark will set new trends in its approach to agriculture and organic production. It will become a link between the main production centres and the retail and consumer markets, thus achieving economies of scale. The construction of a modern greenhouse park will create new jobs and help to develop international business for SMEs.

AgroFreshPark will allow you to create a modern business model that will allow producers to achieve competitive food prices. Own source of energy will reduce production costs, integration of smaller companies will reduce maintenance fees, and common logistics will enable more advantageous transport in both directions. The use of geothermal energy will reduce CO2 emissions. MODERN TECHNOLOGIES IN THE AFP

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS

Lighting is a key element when growing crops. Providing the right amount of light is essential to achieve high yields throughout the year. In the first phase, AgroFreshPark will cover 30 hectares of modern greenhouses, some of which will be equipped with artificial lighting.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

The climate in Poland is characterised by large temperature differences between winter and summer. The temperature in the greenhouse should be maintained at an appropriate level throughout the year. In order to provide sufficient heat, control temperature and maintain proper humidity in AgroFresh Park, 80% of specially sunny windows will be installed.

WATER RECYCLING

Rainwater will be drawn into the water feeding the retention reservoirs (also from the FreshPark section). In addition, it will be extracted from two groundwater wells. Modern filtration and irrigation systems will be used to control the pH level in the water. Water treatment systems have been designed for water recycling. In this way, AgroFreshPark will ensure high productivity, tasty products and better financial results in the long term, with the support of experienced professionals responsible for high-quality vegetable cultivation.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Greenhouses need a lot of energy, so geothermal energy is the ideal solution to save money thanks to the huge scale of the project. Geothermal wells take water at a temperature of about 70-80˚C from a depth of 2,000 metres. This well will provide the greenhouses with heat and the water that has been pumped out will be returned to the ground. This makes the whole process environmentally friendly and pollution-free.

WHY POLAND?

Poland is perceived as one of the largest producers on the European agri-food market. Thus, it is becoming an increasingly stronger player. Agriculture and food industry together form a key sector of the Polish economy. Vegetable production is an important part of this sector, although it accounts for only 10% of the total agricultural production.

Poland has a very large internal market, as it has a population of around 38 million inhabitants. An additional advantage is the excellent location. Location in the centre of Europe significantly improves logistics and transport of products to other countries. Growing urbanization is raising the rank of Poland as the main food supplier in Europe. Poland is the fourth largest country in the European Union in terms of arable land, after France, Germany and Spain, and 200 million EU citizens live within a radius of 1,000 kilometres of Poland’s borders. Poland has more advantages than any other country and can therefore become a major centre of food production and processing in Europe.

Tomatoes are a popular vegetable in Poland. Figures from CSO show that the average tomato consumption per household in 2018 was about 10 pieces per person and represented about 20% of total vegetable consumption. Tomato consumption exceeded that of cucumbers, carrots, onions and cabbage. Tomato imports from Spain and the Netherlands in 2018 amounted to about 64% of total consumption. The creation of AgroFresh Park in Poland will significantly reduce the import of fruit and vegetables from other countries and create many new jobs.

WHY THE ŁÓDZKIE PROVINCE?

Poland is located in the centre of Europe and Łódź in the centre of Poland. This location is therefore ideal in terms of logistics, but not only. First of all, AgroFreshPark is located 3 km from the exit of the newly built S8 expressway, so you can quickly reach the A1 and A2 motorways. Additionally, the Łódź Province has a moderately warm climate, with temperatures reaching around 30˚C in summer and -10˚C in winter. The feasibility study carried out by AGH University of Science and Technology also showed that the selected locality – Gucin – has a high geothermal potential and is ideally suited for such an investment.
